Experience the beautiful, World Heritage City of Bath at Christmas time with expert Karin Hellaby. This historic city, renowned for its Georgian architecture and Roman baths, transforms into a magical wonderland with a sea of twinkling lights and decorated chalets as the Christmas market fills the streets with artisans offering unique crafts and gifts, as well as aromas of festive food and drinks which are sure to get you in the Christmas spirit!
An excursion to the American Museum, which houses a world-famous collection of textiles, embroideries and weavings, offers the opportunity to view and learn about quilts not usually on display. You will also be able to stock up on supplies at Midsomer Quilting, once voted the UK’s favourite quilting shop, spend time at the famous Roman Baths and delve into 2000 years of history, and join Karin for two full-day hand stitching workshops. This is sure to be a memorable and perfect pre-Christmas break in the ceremonial county of Somerset!

Workshop information: The project will be a festive wall hanging which will include hand sewing, stitchery, embroidery, applique and paper piecing techniques. This project is suitable for all abilities, from beginner to advanced crafters.
Make your way to the historic city of Bath. Meet Karin Hellaby and your tour manager at the Apex City of Bath Hotel before this afternoon’s walking tour of Bath which will begin at 2:30pm.
Tonight we enjoy a welcome dinner.
After breakfast, enjoy a full-day workshop with Karin in the hotel.
The Bath Christmas Market will be taking place during our stay in the city and is within walking distance of the hotel, enabling you to visit independently throughout the week. The market is open from 10am until early evening each day.
The American Museum in Bath, located in the stunning Claverton Manor, is a unique institution dedicated to showcasing American history and culture. The museum boasts an impressive collection of American decorative arts, textiles, quilts, and folk art. During our visit, we will spend time with the museums textile specialist who will give a brief introduction to the history of quilting in America, highlighting its evolution from the colonial period to the present day and explain the cultural significance of quilts, including how they were used in daily life, their role in social and community events, and their symbolic meanings before giving you the opportunity to view quilts not normally on display in the museum.
A visit to Midsomer Quilting Shop is a delightful experience for anyone passionate about quilting and sewing. During this afternoon’s visit, you will have the opportunity to view the shops 12 x 12 Challenge Exhibition where, in the past, work from international prize-winners has been displayed alongside that of complete beginners as well as stock up on supplies! The shop regularly updates its fabric selection, offering a vast array of high-quality material, including cottons, batiks, flannels, and specialty prints along with a comprehensive supply of threads, needles and other equipment.
Today, join Karin for the final, full-day workshop in the hotel. This evening, we enjoy a festive farewell dinner.
This morning, we will visit the Roman Baths, one of the best-preserved ancient spas in the world. During the visit, you will be able to see the Sacred Spring which produces over a million litres of water daily at a temperature of 46°C, the Roman Temple dedicated to the goddess Sulis Minerva, The Bathhouse, comprising the Great Bath, hot and cold plunge pools, and saunas and once an area central to Roman social and cultural life.
Following the visit, we will return to the hotel from where you can depart at your leisure.
Please note: Car parking is not available at the hotel, the nearest parking is at Charlotte Street Car Park approx. 5-minute walk from hotel. Bath Railway Station is approx. 5-minute taxi journey / 10-minute walk from hotel.
Mobility information: You will need to have a reasonable level of fitness
to get the most out of this holiday. You should be able to access / alight
the transportation unaided and there may be a walk between the coach drop off
point and the excursion venue. By their nature, walking tours, museum visits
etc involve being on your feet for a significant amount of time and may cover
uneven ground. Whilst our excursions are taken at a leisurely pace, for the
enjoyment of everyone in the group you should be able to keep up with your fellow
travellers. |
