Skill level: Confident beginner – must be proficient in double and treble crochet. This retreat is not suitable for a complete beginner.
Techniques covered: Working in the round, colour work, tapestry crochet and colour blending, together with a variety of crochet stitches including popcorn and crab stitch. You will also learn an array of game changer crochet tips and tricks.
What to bring: 5mm, 4mm and 3.5mm crochet hooks, scissors, stitch markers and yarn needles. You are invited to bring your own stash of acrylic and cotton DK yarns, if you have any, to workshop colours with Emma, who can give you a deeper understanding of how to create harmonious colour palettes. Please be reassured that it is not essential to bring yarn as each kit will have enough yarn to complete each project. There will also be an opportunity to purchase additional cotton DK yarn from Emma.
Check in to your room from 3pm. Join your expert, retreat manager and fellow guests for dinner this evening.
We begin with the basics as we learn the tips and techniques for making a round base that stays flat (no wavy ripple edges!) and familiarise ourselves with the pattern that can be adjusted to any size. Emma will show you how to work the tapestry crochet method as you embark on a day of making colourful crochet baskets.
You will have the opportunity to create a variety of colourwork patterns at your own pace, with Emma on hand to show you all the tips and techniques for making beautiful baskets. This is very much a day filled with the joys of colour and is perfect for anyone wishing to build their confidence around selecting and working with different colour pallets.
Today we are building on the skills learnt yesterday to make a small shoulder bag. The bag will use an elongated stitch to create a slightly denser, textured finish and will be worked in the round bottom up, allowing us to learn the fundamentals of this technique as we go. We will be blending colours to create a fade effect, using two strands held together throughout. The bag is finished with a crab stitch edging, a truly versatile stitch that, once learned, can be incorporated into many projects.
