2025 Workshop Information: This weekend is all about losing the fear of inserting linings by creating a beautiful Firle Coat by Sussex Seamstress. This simple and easy-to-construct style will fast become a wardrobe favourite, whilst demystifying the complexity of adding linings to garments. Over the course of the weekend, you will work at your own pace to construct a coat tailored to your personal style.
Skill Level: Best suited to confident to advanced beginners. You should be comfortable using a sewing pattern and have some basic dressmaking experience including sewing seams, hems, and threading a machine. While you may not complete your coat during the retreat, you will have a nearly finished garment, and all the skills needed to finish at home.
Requirements List: Sussex Seamstress Firle Coat pattern, coat fabric (avoid plaids/stripes unless you are skilled in pattern matching. Opt for felt-like soft coating fabric), lining (opt for non-slip fabrics or brushed cotton for added warmth), 3 toggles or alternative fastenings, your own sewing equipment (fabric and paper scissors, pins, unpicker, etc.)
Check in to your room from 3pm. Get to know Amber, your Retreat Manager and fellow guests over dinner this evening.
This morning, you will cut out the main fabric and linings. In the afternoon, you will begin construction of your pockets and start to sew the coat and lining with Amber on hand every step of the way.
Today you will spend a full day sewing your coat and lining, with Amber on hand to guide and assist. The workshop will end at approximately 5pm.
Please Note: This itinerary will operate on 24th April 2026.

You’ll leave with a customised pattern and new fabric manipulation skills allowing you to recreate decorative details into you sewing garments and projects time and time again.
